Reusable nappies work pretty similarly to disposable nappies. Modern reusable nappies are much more advanced than those that were used originally as they are now made to look and function similar to a disposable nappy making them much more convenient. While there are many types of reusable nappies, most look like a regular nappy but are made of fabric rather than a disposable material. The outside fabric is waterproof, allowing any moisture to stay inside the nappy, and the inner fabric is soft and absorbent. To increase absorbency, you can also add an insert.
Disposable nappies have come a long long way since boiling rags over a victorian stove. With all those benefits, they can sometimes be a little overwhelming with every variant and option at your fingertips. We have included a diaper care guide in our footer which should include the bare essentials to get you started, you can also keep up to date with our blog.
Most people find that reusable nappies are worth it. There are so many different benefits such as cost savings, ensuring your baby isn’t coming into contact with the toxins used to create disposable nappies, and it’s so much less wasteful and detrimental to the environment. While they do require a little bit more work because they need to be washed, they are still very convenient, and most parents love them even more because you can get them with those lasting attractive patterns!
While microfibre is a popular choice because it’s cheap and absorbs quickly, bamboo is superior for many reasons when it comes to nappy liners. Bamboo is silky soft on your baby’s skin which is important to ensure that they stay comfortable. A comfortable baby is a happy baby, and they’ll be sure to let you know if they’re not comfortable!
Bamboo is also very absorbent while still remaining pretty slim so it’s not too bulky in your baby’s nappy. Additionally, although it absorbs quite a bit of liquid, it doesn’t release that liquid as easily as micro-fibre does when pressure is applied. This means bamboo is better when it comes to preventing leaks.
One thing that causes some hesitation among parents when it comes to reusable nappies is the upfront cost. It seems more expensive than buying a package of disposable nappies. However, it’s important to consider that you will need to be buying nappies for at least two years for most children, so those disposable nappies truly add up. With reusable nappies, the expenses are upfront and then you won’t have to put much more into it unless your baby outgrows them or you, like many parents, fall in love with collecting different prints and patterns.
Depending on how often you can wash your nappies, it’s best to get a set of at least 24. Especially when your baby is quite small, they will need to be changed every 2-3 hours throughout the day and most of the night. You can expect to need at least 8 per day and if you want to wash every 3 days, that will put you at 24. Of course, it’s always a good idea to get a few extras if you can.
Shopping for reusable nappies is great! Especially when there are some beautiful and fun designs available, but it’s crucial that you understand what kind of reusable nappies work best. People have different opinions, but most will agree that a reusable nappy that looks like a regular nappy that already has some absorbency built-in works best. You can get bamboo liners to add absorbency as your baby gets bigger and their capacity for wetness increases.
Of course we will always be slightly bias to our own product but at the end our aim is to make sense when it comes to our prices, whilst sourcing good quality products which last. We are still quite new to the nappy industry so we are open to all feedback, since we operate with smaller inventories; we are willing to evolve our products continuously according to our consumer needs.
Yes we know ! but be assured our liners are 100% biodegradable and made with quick growing bamboo, so phew your conscience is clear! Liners do make life a little easier by catching those solids which can be easily separated before that wash.
Disposbale liners can run up a cost over time, that's why all our nappies come with a charcoal liner which are built to last.
Although our niche is all about reusable nappies (or cloth diapers) we have been a little creative when it comes to making the whole process a little easier. Our diaper deodoriser and sleep machine not only help with your comfort, but reduce restless nights and make that nappy change easier than before.

Product Care
Because reusable nappies don’t have the chemicals that disposable nappies do to wick away moisture, it’s important to change them anytime they are soiled. For newborns, this can be every 2 hours, but for older babies and toddlers, you can often wait several hours in between as they get used to holding it for longer. This will also help to avoid leaks.
Reusable nappies can be washed in a regular washing machine. The best washing routine will depend on if you have hard water, but in general is as follows:
- Remove any solids from the reusable nappy (for 100% breastfed babies you can leave it as breastmilk poop is water-soluble)
- Wash reusable nappies in hot water with no detergent to get most of the waste out.
- Wash again in hot water with detergent. Avoid detergents that have added softeners.
- Do a final rinse in warm or hot water.
- Dry on low in a dryer or hang dry.
If you start to notice any smells after the nappies have been cleaned, you can try adding baking soda to your wash cycle. There is a lot of information online to help with any issues that may arise when washing your reusable nappies.
If you don’t have enough washable nappies built up to do a full load, you can wash them with other clothes. It’s best to add the clothes after the first rinse that will get rid of most of the waste in the nappies. From there you can add other clothing that will fare well with the same washing routine.
Many parents are unsure of how to use reusable nappies when they’re out and away from home. It’s pretty simple! Just bring clean washable nappies and a wet bag along with you in your baby bag. When the nappy is soiled, place it in your wet bag, and then when you get home you can add it to your pail or bucket where you keep dirty nappies until it’s time to wash.
One of the most common problems that parents have with reusable nappies is leaks. Most of the time when leaks occur its one of three things: improper fit, over-saturation, or compression. Making sure you change the nappy anytime it becomes soiled will help with over-saturation.
If your baby is larger or produces a lot of urine, you can add a bamboo liner to help increase the absorption. If that’s not the issue, then it’s likely an improper fit. All babies are different, so sometimes trying different size settings can help. There should be no gap between the baby’s thigh and the edge of the nappy or else you will definitely have leaks. Additionally, tight clothing will compress your baby’s nappy so that it is more likely to leak. Loose-fitting clothing, or even just allowing your baby to stay in a nappy with no pants when it’s warm enough to do so, is a great way to prevent leaks.
